Holst Presents Energy Trust of Oregon Net Zero Research
Post Occupancy Evaluations: The Missing Link in Affordable Housing Design
Housing is widely understood as a social determinant of health, and housing conditions affect multiple dimensions of residents’ well-being. However, first-hand feedback from residents is seldom collected during the design and development process. A resident-centered perspective is a critical tool for learning how the actual living experience relates to the intended experience in affordable housing projects. Holst’s research for the Energy Trust of Oregon’s Net Zero Fellowship explored methodologies for post-occupancy evaluations.
Research Presentations
Maggie Harris, Senior Associate and Net Zero Fellow, along with Cory Hawbecker, Principal and Sustainability Director, will present research that establishes a practical post-occupancy evaluation methodology for affordable multifamily housing projects and explores the relationship between building performance and resident perceptions.
At the presentation, you will learn:
- An overview of traditional post-occupancy evaluations and why a human-centered approach is critical when assessing affordable housing projects
- Key themes that emerged from a pilot study for a permanent housing program, including resident-identified priorities, alongside early building-level findings related to ventilation performance and energy use
- How this new mixed-methods approach can be applied as a practical solution for other affordable multifamily housing projects
