Sustainability
While the project did not pursue any sustainability certifications, integrating sustainable design principles was of the utmost importance. The renovation improved the building envelope, which is now exceptionally well insulated and runs almost 100% on electricity. Any additions were made within the cabin’s existing footprint, minimizing its impact on the surrounding environment.
Land Recognition
We have a responsibility to not only acknowledge but also elevate Native communities and their needs. This project sits in the area currently known as South Haven, which is northwest of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, one of eleven federally recognized tribes in what is now Minnesota. At the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers, Coldwater Springs and other meeting sites represented “a place of healing and peace for centuries.” In 1805, tribes ceded 155,000 acres of land in this area to the U.S. government. Despite treaty violations and direct violence against Native people from the 1800s onward, Dakota and Anishinaabe people maintain connection to these places today. We honor their resilience. We encourage you to explore the stories of these communities through Native-led resources like the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community’s interactive timeline, the Bdote Memory Map, and Dakota artist Marlena Myles’ excellent land maps and audio resources.
A Cabin Reimagined
Along the bluffs of Lake Sylvia in South Haven, Minnesota, Lake Sylvia Retreat is a modern but humble getaway for a family and their guests. A renovation and addition, the new building expands off the footprint of the existing cabin, leaving the site’s topography unaltered. In this way, the design lives light on the land, respecting the environment and maximizing lake views.
Retreat Fit for the Family
The cabin’s floor plan is arranged around a central stair that connects the building’s two levels. On the main floor, an open kitchen, dining, and living room provide ample space for generations of the family to gather. A balcony creates a relaxing space to unwind and enjoy views of the lake. The downstairs features a bunk room for the grandkids and access to a patio that is nestled among the lush lakefront.
Inspired Materiality
The cabin’s materials draw inspiration from the environment—dark wood on the exterior blends with the surrounding trees. A bridge to the entry creates the illusion that the house is floating above the bluffs, and large windows offer transparency, panoramic lake views, and ample natural light. The lower floor integrates seamlessly into the surrounding landscape with matching stone wrapping the exterior.
