Land Recognition
We have a responsibility to not only acknowledge but also elevate Native communities and their needs. This project is located in what is currently known as Bend, Oregon. This place is a part of a broad swath of land historically inhabited by the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, which includes the Wana Łama (Warm Springs), Wasq’ú (Wasco) and Northern Paiute people. The Tribes each observered different customs and spoke different languages, but trade was frequent between Warm Springs and Wasco people. This land was ceded in the Treaty of 1855. Paiute people joined the Tribes in 1879. The Confederated Tribes collectively adopted a constitution and by-laws in 1937.
Educating ourselves is an important action. We encourage you to explore the stories of this community through Native-led resources like the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs and Warm Springs Museum websites.

High Desert Hotel Renovation
The renovated exterior of the Waypoint Hotel features a welcoming entrance, highlighted by a series of cedar-framed, fiber cement-faced boxes and open apertures. A renovated porte-cochere and a shifted front door bring symmetry and balance to the main entrance.

Custom Ingenuity
The fully renovated lobby features a modern, outdoorsy aesthetic with raw, natural materials: wood, steel, and concrete. A forest graphic is wrapped around the central fireplace’s wood accent wall. A 17-foot-long kayak frame suspended from the ceiling was turned into a custom light feature that provides a warm and welcoming experience for guests.

Connected Amenities
The breakfast lounge is a new multifunctional space that was created by joining smaller rooms. Double doors create a commodious connection to the new outdoor patio, which feature fire pits and flexible seating for year-round use.

Upgraded Guest Rooms
The renovated guest rooms feature graphic geometric patterns on new casework and photographic images applied to the headboard wall. Added soundproofing improves acoustic privacy between rooms.

Setting Precedent
The Waypoint Hotel was the first project to go through Bend Design Review in a new zoning overlay district. Since opening in fall 2019, it has been a catalyst for the neighborhood, spurring additional improvements nearby.
